I received a diffuser with “essential oils” as a gift before I was educated about the importance of having an authentically pure essential oil. The very first time of using it, I had a severe negative reaction to it!! On the day of receiving it, I turned on the diffuser with lavender oil as I slipped into bed to go to sleep for the night. A couple hours later, I awoke from sleep with a nauseous feeling as well as feeling very dizzy. I got out of bed and left the room. I immediately thought to myself, “What did that oil do to me?!” I returned to my bedroom and turned off the diffuser immediately. After about an hour, I felt normal again. This event turned me off from essential oils! I never used it again! Then a couple months later I learned of the truth behind the marketing of essential oils. I learned to buy ONLY authentic essential oils. It was the ONLY way I would ever use them! I never wanted to experience that negative effect again. It was scary! Young Living Essential Oils won my favor! It sets a high priority on the BEST of authenticity! I love Young Living products – I use them every day!
There are four types of oils on the market. These types are as follows: Authentic, manipulated or augmented, perfume, and synthetic. Don’t be deceived! Ones labeled “pure essential oils” or “therapeutic grade” are actually in the manipulated or augmented category. Why? Because it is a very common practice to remove heavier or earthier smelling molecules that are in the oil. They remove them to enhance a more pleasing fragrance. This will degrade the authenticity of the essential oil!
Manipulated or Augmented
Essential oil companies often hire perfumers to help make the product smell more pleasing. The perfumers will take away the heavier molecules which the oil will go through fractional distillation. Very small amounts of another species will be added to enhance the fragrance or to make it match a previous batch fragrance which is called rectification.
Pure with added synthetic
Essential oils are often labeled as “pure,” but have had a synthetic added to it. It isn’t pure then. There is a percentage of pure, but then there is a percentage of synthetic to enhance the final aroma. These types will often cause headaches, and they do NOT have any therapeutic action.
These “essential oils” are NOT essential oils! There are no regulations on labeling essential oils, so full synthetic oils can be labeled as pure and sold to unsuspecting consumers. These products smell nothing like the original plant, but they can be very close so that the consumer may not even know that they are synthetic. Synthetic oils can have possible severe negative reactions.
An essential oil must be 100% pure throughout the bottle whether it is a single species or multiple species which are labeled as a blend. No added synthetics should be added. If it is a blend or synergy, each species blended should be 100% pure.
